Our approach
Our historians take a People’s History approach to 19th and 20th century British history, centring the lives of otherwise ordinary people who lived through extraordinary times. These are histories of everyday life and living, of family, community, work, and leisure. They paint a picture of how the present has been shaped by the past lives and actions of folks like us.
Our artists draw on their extensive knowledge of British painting to identify a painter prominent at or around the time your home was built. The photo of your home you submit is used as the basis for a unique and beautiful digital painting rendered using the latest AI tools.

Founders
Building Stories was founded by artist Will Cenci and historian Dr John Price in the autumn of 2024. It grew out of a decade of collaboration on public and People’s History projects that engaged communities with local stories and empowered them to shape their narratives and places.
Their collaborative projects reached hundreds of thousands of people through exhibitions, walks, interactive installations, public art, talks and more. It was funded by bodies including the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Mayor of London, Goldsmiths, University of London and the Home Office and took place at institutions like the V&A and City Hall.
Their work together has been covered by BBC London TV and Radio, The Guardian and BBC News online, amongst others.
